Just A Thought: Bread of Life

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.  And the tempter came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”  But He answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”                                                                             Matthew 4:1-4

Jesus was tempted after 40 days of fasting.  There’s nothing His body wanted more than food, but He knew that being faithful to God was more important than food.

Bread has a place of significance in both the Old and New Testament.  In Exodus 25 God instructs Moses to construct the showbread table.  This was to be placed in the Tent of Meeting near the ark of the covenant.  The bread and table were symbols of coming to God’s house and fellowshipping with Him.  There is a need inside of us that can only be filled by our relationship with God.  Food enters our mouth, goes into our stomach, is used up, and then we crave more.  Fellowship with God satisfies a deep longing that nothing else can reach.  We spend a lot of time figuring out what to eat.  Do we spend time planning our spiritual diet?  Is there a time and place every day where we go and get fed spiritually?

What Are You Craving?  We need to live on a steady diet of God’s Word. His Word enlarges our heart and opens our eyes.  Just as food gives us energy for our physical activities, God’s Word gives us what we need for our daily walk with Him.  The exciting thing about the Word of God is that the more we eat it, the more we crave it.  If we aren’t desiring the Word of God, it’s usually because we have neglected it, or there is sin in our life that is making us avoid it.  Be purposeful - don’t just have milk but grow deeper in your knowledge and understanding by eating the meat of the Word.  By this, you won’t starve spiritually but will grow and become strong in your faith.
