Mystery and Suspense:
“Dark Justice” by Brandilyn Collins
Returning to their home in San Carlos from a weekend at the Ritz Carlton on the ocean, Hannah Shire and her aging mother were driving the scenic route through the country. Hoping to help her mother with her increasing dementia, Hannah thought the quiet views would also quiet her mother’s mind. That decision would change their lives. A wrecked car and a man lying on the ground at the side of the road caught her mother’s attention. Hannah stopped to see if she could help. She quickly dialed 911.
The man was very weak and desperate to tell her something. He whispered words to her, telling her to “be careful” and “tell no one.” Soon the ambulance came and took the man away. The police are asking questions, wondering if he said anything to her about how the accident happened. Hannah and her mother stated they knew nothing. They had only stopped to help.
When home, Hannah discovers a flash drive in her coat pocket. Realizing the man must have dropped it in her pocket when he clutched at her, she decides to look at it. Soon, she and her mother are fleeing for their lives. Where can they go for help? Not to her daughter because that would put her in jeopardy, too. Who is so desperate to retrieve this drive? Hannah just wants to keep her family alive. Only then does she learn the threat is not just to them, but to the entire country.
While this story is fictional, it is based on the terrifying reality that terrorists could target America’s electrical grid. Even back in 2010, a sophisticated computer worm spread through Iran, India, and Indonesia. Named Stuxnet, the worm looked for very specific settings, then injected its own code into that system. That particular threat is no longer viable but malware is a problem. Get ready for a really suspenseful story.
