FATHER'S DAY
Sonora Smart Dodd proposed the idea of "Father's Day" in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day message. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Mr. Smart was a veteran of the Civil War. He was widowed when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. William Smart raised the newborn and his other five children by himself on a farm in the state of Washington.
After Sonora became an adult, she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. She wanted her father to know just how special he was to her. She chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration on June 19, 1910. Her father had been born in June.
In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation in 1966 declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be continued on the third Sunday in June of each year. (--various sources)
