THE LORD IS MY REFUGE

In our message today, we hear the voice of David, who Scripture says is a man after God’s own heart. (1 Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22)  David put his pen to parchment and proclaimed, THE LORD IS MY REFUGE.  This posture is not a one-time occurrence.  The Bible is filled with references to God providing refuge for His people.  The most frequent references to the reality of God being our refuge are found in the Psalms.  Some of them include:

2:12 “Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.”

5:11 “But let all who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy.”

7:10 “My shield is God Most High…”

16:1 “Keep me safe, O God, for in You I take refuge.”

18:2 “The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer: my God is my Rock in whom I take refuge.”

46:1-3 “God is our Refuge and Strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its  waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”

All of us face temptations, trials, and troubles in life.  Some feel that all they deal with is one crisis after another and may ask, “When will I ever get a break?”  We feel the storms of life beat down on us.  For some of us, it may seem like we never have a moment’s peace; it is just one thing after another.

David experienced these things as well and more.  Often individuals try to solve problems on their own.  David’s response was to take his troubles to the Lord and seek refuge in Him.

The Lord invites us to cast our cares, anxieties, troubles, and burdens on Him.  1 Peter 5:7 reflects, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”  Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.”

May we be like David and say, “IN THE LORD I TAKE REFUGE!”
